Curious about getting braces or clear aligners? If so, you may be wondering how to get started. In most practices, the first step is a consultation. To help you feel confident booking your first appointment, we’ll explain what to expect at an orthodontist consultation!
Do You Need a Consultation?
When you first schedule an appointment with an orthodontist, many will require you to first have an in-person consultation. Consultations are an essential first step in any orthodontic journey. They allow you to express your wants and goals to your doctor and help the doctor fully understand your situation and health.
Many times, consultations are no-obligation visits. So if you decide the plan laid out won’t work for you, you can leave and get a second opinion whenever you like. It’s a good idea to get an orthodontic consultation whenever you have concerns about your tooth alignment, or if your regular dentist recommends orthodontic treatment.
The Steps of an Orthodontist Consultation
So you take the plunge and make an orthodontist consultation appointment. What’s next? Most consultations follow a similar schedule. While we personalize the experience to you and your unique needs, here are the four steps you can typically expect.
1. Meeting Your Team
When you walk into our office, you’ll be greeted by our staff and welcomed with warm, friendly smiles. If you have any paperwork to fill out or sign, our front desk staff will be happy to guide you through the necessary steps.
Our orthodontic assistants and staff will ensure you’re comfortable and well cared for throughout the orthodontist consultation. Once you’re called back, you’ll have the opportunity to meet your orthodontist. At Martin Orthodontics, you’ll either have Dr. Martin or Dr. Martin! Our practice is family-owned and operated, so one of the two brothers—Dr. Paul or Dr. Dave—will direct your care.
2. Assessing Your Smile
Once you’ve become acquainted with your care team, our orthodontists will begin assessing your smile. From X-rays and 3D renderings of your mouth to a thorough physical examination and a discussion of your symptoms, we aim to understand every aspect of your mouth and smile.
Orthodontics goes beyond a pretty smile—it ensures you’re the healthiest version of yourself. We will then assess everything, from your bite posture and tooth alignment to the muscles and bones of your jaw, to create our plan.
3. Explain the Findings
We want you to feel in control of your health. Once we have finished our assessment, we’ll explain our findings. If there are concerns, we’ll explain the risks of leaving them untreated and how soon they should be addressed. During this time, you’ll get to ask any questions you may have about treatment, including whether you qualify for clear aligners instead of braces.
4. Creating a Plan of Action
Once you have a solid understanding of our findings, we will work together to create a game plan to address any concerns. This could include a timeline, the type of treatment, and even determining whether a second opinion or specialist is needed. In the end, you should leave feeling confident in your next steps and final decision.
Easing Your Concerns
We understand that you may still have concerns or hesitations about visiting the orthodontist. But we’re here to make the process as easy as possible for you. Here are some of the common questions and concerns we hear:
Does it hurt? No, consultations are comfortable and noninvasive. This is just an evaluation of your teeth and mouth.
How much does it cost? Nothing! Our consultations are free to help you decide your best plan of action.
Do I need a referral? Not necessarily—if you have concerns about your smile, we’re happy to evaluate them for you.
How long is the appointment? It’ll vary depending on your unique needs, but you can expect to be out of there within the hour.
